The History of Chiropractic

Did you know Chiropractic has the education and technology to treat many problems, not just back and neck pain.

The word chiropractic is derived from Greek and means “ To Perform With The Hands”. Paintings from ancient Egypt and Greece have shown chiropractic was used thousand of years ago. However, David Palmer in the U.S did not find modern chiropractic until 1895.

Treatment is usually painless and contrary to popular beliefs seems completely normal and un-dramatic. Combining several factors including the patient’s examination history and/or x-rays, the doctor can make the decision on how to treat your problem.

Chiropractic today has the education and technology to treat many problems, not just back and neck pain. Chiropractors are also know to promote exercising, stretching the muscles, and eating a healthy diet.

Once the problem has been relieved, the chiropractor can help with prevention of similar problems by identifying certain strains that your body is exposed to everyday.

Chiropractic is a detailed examination of the joints of the body to determine if and where a functional misalignment exists. If misalignment exists and is isolated the chiropractor can physically restore the joint to its optimal position and range of motion. This may take one, or a series of treatments to stabilize the condition.

History of Chiropractic in the U.S

The history of chiropractic dates from 1895, when Daniel David Palmer of Iowa performed the first chiropractic adjustment on a partially deaf janitor, Harvey Lillard, who then mentioned a few days later to Palmer that his hearing seemed better. This led to Palmer opening a school of chiropractic two years later. The word "chiropractic" was coined from Greek root words by Reverend Samel Weed.

Early chiropractic bore similarities to osteopathy and was criticized as practicing medicine without a license. Those similarities resulted in many chiropractors, including D.D. Palmer, being jailed on such charges.

In 1906, D.D.'s son B. J. Palmer took control of the Palmer School of Chiropractic. B.J. began to accept the use of technology such as X-rays within chiropractic care. Dr. Solon Langworthy was the first to use the word "subluxation", and published the first book on chiropractic, called "Modernized Chiropractic" — "Special Philosophy — A Distinct System", in 1906.

Over the years, the profession has been intensely divided; one group, called "mixers", combining spinal adjustments with other treatments; the other, called "straights", relying solely on spinal adjustments. A conference sponsored by the National Institutes of Health in 1975 spurred the development of chiropractic research.

For most of its existence, chiropractic has battled with mainstream medicine, sustained by what was once labelled antiscientific and pseudoscientific ideas such as subluxation. The American Medical Association called chiropractic an "unscientific cult" and boycotted it until losing a 1987 antitrust case. By the mid 1990s there was a growing scholarly interest in chiropractic, which helped efforts to improve service quality and establish clinical guidelines such as recommending manual therapies for acute low back pain.

Chiropractic is a health care discipline, which emphasizes the inherent recuperation power of the body to heal itself without drugs or surgery. Chiropractors focus on the relationship between the spine and nervous system, and how the relationship affects the preservation and restoration of health.

The chiropractic belief on healing and health differs on the traditional medical view. A chiropractor will evaluate the entire patient as a whole during examination and treating a patient’s health alignment and not just focusing on only one symptom or specific part of the body. We know the body can maintain and heal itself in most cases, without chemicals or surgery. We believe health is something that comes from within.

I have struggled intermittently with lower back pain for about three years, and most recently for over two months straight with no improvement. Once I started having to avoid things I enjoy like running and was waking up in the night due to back pain, I decided it was time to see a chiropractor. I selected Koudelka Health Center based on insurance acceptance, proximity to work, and Dr. Koudelka's additional certifications such as Graston Technique.
I have been more than impressed with my treatment so far. I woke up for the first time with no pain after only two sessions. The best thing is he doesn't just crack your back and send you on your way (my previous experiences); he takes the time to show you exercises (most of which can be done at home with less than $20 of equipment) so the effects of treatment can be sustained long-term.
I am still fairly early in my treatment but am already seeing improvements so I have optimism for the first time in a while after being convinced for years I was just always going to struggle with back pain. I wouldn't come here if it will hurt your feelings to find out you have a weak muscle groups and you don't really want to make the effort to improve them :) . I haven't tried Graston or Spinal Decompression, but he offers those too.

my mom has been in a lot of pain for a long time. Dr. Kourdelka is a wonderful doctor who is caring, honest, and understanding, I am pleased with his service and my mom's increasing pain relief.

Dr Todd is very friendly and attentive. He remembers your previous concerns and questions, and will ask about them in later appointments. His adjustments are very smooth, painless - and EFFECTIVE! :)

I came to see Dr. Koudelka because of some shoulder pain I was having. He is very nice and took time to understand my issue. My visit was covered by insurance too which was great. I would definitely recommend him to others.
His office is very nice, clean, easy to find, and has hassle free parking.

After going to the urgent care for fairly extreme neck pain, I was given medication (that just didn't work) and was told to rest a day. I tried to make it through a shift at work but when I realized it wasn't going to be possible with my pain, I called Dr. Koudelka's office to see if there was any way they could see me in the immediate future. I was so surprised (and extremely relieved) when Nancy (friendly and knowledgeable assistant/front desk) said they could see me that very afternoon. Dr. Koudelka listened to my complaints with compassion and professionalism. By the end of my first visit, I was feeling significantly better. I have since been back and encourage anyone needing a chiropractor to visit this office. The entire staff genuinely cares about you and your treatment is their top priority. HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS OFFICE!

I am 27 years old and just now getting around to seeing a chiropractor, tsk tsk. Thanks to a recommendation from my fiancé, I ended up making an appointment to see Dr. Koudelka and I'm so glad I did. Honestly, I had no idea what to expect and was a little nervous before my first visit, but after meeting him and his friendly office manager, Nancy, I was put at ease. He really took the time to ask me about my concerns and problem areas and walked me through each step as he did it. I had been having pretty bad upper back pain before seeing Dr. Koudelka and it already feels much better! I can't wait for my next appointment!

I went to Dr. Koudelka for my orthotics. He was careful to choose the best type for my running style and took time to show me about the new technology. He was careful to also show other issues that might affect my runs and gave me some recommendations. I highly recommend him.

These guys are the real deal. You will not find any quackery or BS at this place. Todd knows his stuff, does not schedule for things you do not need, and is just darn pleasant to be around. I get mostly soft tissue work done (Graston and ART--Active Release Technique) with some rehab thrown in. I also get an occasional adjustment depending on the body. Staff and wait times are good every time. A++

My search for a chiropractor began after my daughter's pediatrician repeatedly told me that the mild numbness, discomfort, plus hot and cold feeling in her legs was just my daughter experiencing growing pains.

Within the last year my daughter had experienced a moderate fall and the previous symptoms my daughter had been experiencing for years became increasingly worse accompanied with pain.

Initially, we went to a very pleasant holistic/chiropractor who although I think has good diagnosis skills was not much help as far as treatment. My daughter experienced very little improvement and after several visits we decided to find treatment elsewhere.

Our personal trainer referred us to her chiropractor Dr. Koudelka. She said that her treatment with Dr. Koudelka was a siginificant improvement from her previous years of treatment with other chiropractors.

I'm starting off my experience by saying that I really like the location of the office and available parking. At the office we were greeted by Dr. Koudelka's assistant Kristi who is polite, friendly, and has proven to be an excellent multitasker.

Dr. Koudelka himself has a very friendly and pleasant manner. I was immediately impressed with his knowledge and communication skills. His patience and excellent understanding of what you are trying to communicate is reassuring.

My daughter's numbness and pain improved after the first treatment and significantly improved after the 4th treatment with Dr. Koudelka. After several treatments my daughter is no longer experiencing any numbness and pain. We are continuing monthly visits with Dr. Koudelka to maintain my daughter's great condition and for any adjustments as needed.

Over all it has been a completely pleasant experience and I can sincerely say that I am exceedingly happy and immensely satisfied with Dr. Koudelka's services.

After a year of back pain and unsuccessful spinal injections Dr Todd was the one to cure me. Now pain free I still go once a month for "maintenance" which is proving effective. The office has a friendly and relaxed atmosphere, and I whole-heartedly recommend this practice to prospective patients.

I Thought I needed surgery until a friend recommended to KHC. Very professional staff and all the high tech equipment gives you a sense of comfort. Dr. Koudelka has a way of explaining the problem so that you don't need a medical degree to understand. I highly recommend Koudelka Health Center!

I had severe neck and back pain after a car accident, and Koudelka Health Center was the only solution that actually worked for me. I am now pain free but choose to continue treatment once a month to make sure I continue to feel great. I am so glad I found them!
